Two veteran instructors Ms. Monica Lau and Ms. Elizabeth Neely held a workshop on Alternative Strategies for Teaching Reading on the 6th of September 2013. The workshop focused on teaching lower level students at UM, and they led an engaging discussion throughout the workshop, which both presenters and participants surely enjoyed.
Both Ms. Lau and Ms. Neely were very enthusiastic on teaching reading and shared with the ELC colleagues their experience and research on “teaching reading.” They explained that the reading activities were done as part of the curriculum for the lower level students and they had a collection of success stories to report to the colleagues. For example, it was mentioned that the corners of the borrowed books are sometimes so worn out that one can see the frequency of students accessing that particular book and devouring it.
They focused on extensive reading, and they emphasized that reading for enjoyment made reading more effective. They also paid attention to the choice of books because it would only be successful if the language level was appropriate for the students. It would only discourage the students if they find themselves checking the dictionary every 2 minutes. Because the choice of books is so important, in addition to the graded readers available from the library, they have cherry-picked 100 books from 3 publishers for their students. These books were separately purchased by the ELC as part of the ELC library collection.
The participants of the workshop had a taste of some of the activities, asked questions and gave feedback to their work. Rounds of laughter and applause burst out during their presentation, and the audience could not help but nod in agreement with some of their observations and methods. Many participants felt that the activities like “Pass a Book” and the “Reading Circle” could be used not only in the lower levels, but also be adapted for use in different levels.
